In spring 2016 restaurant Korkki opened for business in the Wicander & Larsson’s cork factory, built in 1893. The front of the building resembles the street façade of a Neo-Renaissance residential building, an exceptional sight amongst Finnish factory buildings.
The cork factory mainly produced equipment for aboard life-saving vessels as well as for fishing boats. The raw material used was cork bark. The factory ceased operating in the 1920’s, after which the property has served a number of different owners. Before the cork factory, from 1675 to 1782, the site had been the location of St Michael’s Church, a hospital and a cemetery.
